Microsoft Teams on RealWear is Available for Firstline Workers

Here’s How You Can Try Microsoft Teams on RealWear Public Preview

On March 19, Microsoft and RealWear announced a partnership and revealed that Microsoft Teams on RealWear was “coming soon.”

Last week, Microsoft posted on its website that it officially released Teams on RealWear as a “Public Preview,” along with a lot of great technical getting started information.

Here’s how to get started with Teams on RealWear for HMT-1 and HMT-1Z1 hands-free head-mounted computers.

To access Microsoft Teams on RealWear, there are three requirements:

  1. A RealWear Foresight account is required to access Teams on RealWear (this is free). Go ici if you do not have an account. You will need to know your domain.
  2. Access to Microsoft Teams (via Microsoft 365 license) is required to obtain Microsoft Teams on RealWear. For more information about getting access to Teams, check out How do I get access to Microsoft Teams.
  3. Your RealWear devices must be updated to Release 10.5.0 or above. Go ici to learn how to do that if needed. (TIP – We recommend that you always check with your IT department and third-party app partners first before updating any firmware, and back up any essential data that was stored on your device.)

To save time, be sure you have your Foresight Domain name handy. Again, if you don’t have a domain, feel free to either stop by the Foresight registration page first to get registered, or fill out the form on the Microsoft Teams on RealWear page and our 24/5 support team will get you up and running on Foresight at the same time.

What do I do after I have Teams on the device?

Once you’ve got Teams on your HMT-1 or HMT-1Z1, you’ll want to read this page on getting logged in to get going quickly.

A few important “basics.”

If you’re new to the HMT-1 platform, make sure you are adjusting and fitting your device in a way that is both comfortable and using best practices for the optimal hands-free experience, especially by choosing your dominant eye.

After choosing your dominant eye, have the boom arm in a Z-shape as such:

After that you want to fine-tune a bit more. For instance, we suggest dropping down the microdisplay eyebox just below your line of site.

After that, tilt the screen up just a bit, so that it’s something you can glance at.

Once you can see all four corners of the screen clearly, you’re ready to start interacting with the interface with your voice.

Make sure to practice simple voice commands such as NAVIGATE HOME et MY PROGRAMS. What you see on the screen is what you say. That’s what we refer to as “Say what you see” voice commands.

If you’re not a native English speaker, the device listens to voices in 12 languages. You can change the device default interface language go ici.

You don’t need to speak slowly, as though talking to a non-human. You can typically speak very quickly, but remember that they are voice commands, not natural language, by design. This allows for 99% accuracy.

Also, there is no wake-up call needed (ie. “OK, Google”, or “Hey, Siri.”

The commands are stored locally for optimal experience for high noise environments, even when you’re not connected to the Internet.

What are people using Teams on RealWear for?

The examples are just coming in, since it was just launched, so we are all still in the discovery mode. In the last couple of weeks we’ve fielded a very large number of urgent and COVID-19-related inquiries from our industrial customers both new and existing, requesting an Early Access version Beta version and explaining their use cases.

We crunched the numbers and saw that 73% of all requests were urgent/immediate needs and 44% of all requests have been COVID-19 related.

This is also what Microsoft is hearing as well.

We are hearing from our manufacturing customers around the globe about how the outbreak of COVID-19 is creating new challenges as they work to handle drastic shifts in materials supply and customer demand, and manage factory closures, while contributing to the production of critical supplies to first-line responders across the globe.

Many of these requests are for essential workers for critical infrastructure, including food supply and mask manufacturing, and that the device may help these essential workers keep the supply chain going during this extremely challenging time through remote communication to colleagues around the world. Especially given the current travel restrictions.

Our customer have told us that one of the reasons the HMT-1 is particularly suited for this type of outbreak is its ability to be worn with a variety of PPE requirements, including eye or face protection, latex / surgical gloves, masks, some respirators, and special protective suits and gowns. This is due to RealWear’s purpose-built form factor. The voice-controlled device can also be wiped down and sanitized with 70-75% alcohol, and the comfort pad sanitized with epoxy ethane vapor.
